August 5 stands for victory against fascist misrule: President Shahabuddin

President Mohammed Shahabuddin has described August 5 as the day of "decisive victory" against fascist misrule, marking the anniversary of the historic July mass uprising in Bangladesh.

In a statement issued on the eve of the occasion, the President extended his heartfelt greetings to the freedom-seeking students and people of the country.

“On this day in 2024, students, workers, and ordinary citizens united in resistance against a discriminatory state system and fascist misrule to achieve final victory,” he said in his message commemorating the anniversary.

The President paid deep tribute to the martyrs of the uprising who, he noted, made the ultimate sacrifice to free the country from tyranny. He also prayed for their souls and honored the contributions of those who were injured, disabled, or lost their sight during the movement.

“Ensuring justice for the martyrs and injured fighters of July is a sacred duty of the state, and we are committed to fulfilling it,” he added.

He described the July uprising as an outburst of anger by the youth and the general public against prolonged injustice, poor governance, corruption, enforced disappearances, killings, abductions, and the denial of voting rights.

“Its core objective was to dismantle the fascist system, restore democracy, empower the people, and secure freedom of expression,” the President said.

Highlighting the reforms initiated in the aftermath of the uprising, President Shahabuddin said the state is undergoing major transformation to reflect the hopes and aspirations of the movement.

He expressed hope that a truly democratic, just, and equitable Bangladesh would emerge from this transition.

Concluding his message, the President wished success for all programs undertaken in observance of July Uprising Day.
