A letter has been sent to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, asking for action regarding the potential issuance of an Interpol Red Notice to arrest former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other leaders of the Awami League.
The prosecution confirmed this information on Tuesday, November 12.
Earlier, on November 10, Dr. Asif Nazrul, the legal advisor to the government, visited the old building of the International Crimes Tribunal.
During his visit, he mentioned that the government was planning to request Interpol to issue a Red Notice to bring Sheikh Hasina and other members of the Awami League who are currently abroad back to Bangladesh.
Dr. Nazrul also discussed the Awami League’s recent petition to the International Criminal Court (ICC), where they accused the government of various crimes.
He criticized the petition, saying it was a political move designed to damage Bangladesh`s image internationally.
According to Dr. Nazrul, the ICC is unlikely to take the matter seriously, as the case is based on false claims.
He further explained that this is not an official court case but rather a petition to the ICC`s prosecution office, which anyone can submit.
Dr. Nazrul called the petition baseless and said it was part of an effort to confuse the public and mislead global opinion about the situation in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam gave an update on the investigation into the Awami League`s involvement in war crimes.
He confirmed that while no investigation had started into the party as a whole, investigations into individual members were ongoing.
Tajul Islam mentioned that in these investigations, they had found evidence linking Awami League leaders, especially those in the central leadership, youth, and student wings, to serious crimes such as genocide and crimes against humanity.
Tajul Islam clarified that although the investigation into the party itself had not yet begun, they were collecting important information at the individual level.
He assured that there were no issues with the investigation process and that once the government decided to move forward with investigating the party as a whole, they would be ready to take the next steps.
He also emphasized that the individual investigations were proceeding smoothly without any major problems.
