Information Advisor Mahfuz Alam has accused certain media outlets in Bangladesh of failing to stand against fascism, saying, ‘Don’t foster consent in favour of fascism."
He made the remarks during a seminar titled "Murder and Persecution of Journalists during Fascist Regime", organized by the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust.
The event took place on Monday morning in the conference room of the Department of Film and Publication (DFP).
Addressing the seminar, Mahfuz Alam said, “Some newspapers avoid mentioning the July Uprising, instead they term it as July movement. They speak of a government that came to power after a change—as if 2,000 people were not martyred, as if there was no conspiracy, and Sheikh Hasina was not overthrown. The media cannot whitewash history like this.”
He pointed out that, despite this, such media outlets have not been shut down. “Write what you want, the public is watching you—and so are the families of the martyrs. How dare you ignore what happened in plain sight? Stop fostering consent for fascism,” he added.
Mahfuz Alam further stated that the politicization of journalism is the primary reason for the erosion of press freedom and the rights of journalists.
