Traders attacked during anti-extortion human chain in Karwan Bazar

Traders came under attack on Monday while staging an anti-extortion human chain in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area.

According to witnesses, around 150 to 200 people, under the banner of ‘Islamia Shanti Samity’, formed a human chain in front of the Karwan Bazar Kitchen Market at about 11:00am as part of a pre-announced programme protesting extortion.

At one stage, a group of people armed with sticks allegedly attacked the demonstrators around 11:45 pm, triggering a chase and counter-chase in the area.

It was alleged that Abdur Rahman, an expelled member secretary of the Tejgaon unit of Jubo Dal, has been demanding extortion from local traders in Karwan Bazar since August 5 last year.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Kyashainu Marma, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tejgaon Police Station.
