Actor and Radio Bhumi station chief Shams Ibne Obaid, widely known as Shams Sumon, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka on Monday, media reports said.
Originally from Rajshahi, Sumon completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Rajshahi before pursuing a career in acting.
Driven by a strong passion for performance, he entered the world of theatre and quickly gained recognition among audiences for his distinctive voice and natural acting style.
After establishing himself on television, Sumon expanded his career to films. He made his big-screen debut in the Liberation War-based movie Joyjatra, directed by Toukir Ahmed.
He later appeared in Bidrohi Padma, directed by Badol Khondkar, released in 2006.
In 2008, Sumon delivered a notable performance in Swapnopuron, directed by Shahidul Islam Khokon, earning the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
His popular television works include dramas such as Jonakir Alo, Ayna Kahini, Priya Tumi Sukhi Hou, Chokher Dekha, and Mon Jane Na Moner Thikana.
Sumon was also serving as the station chief of Radio Bhumi, alongside his acting career.
