Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday inaugurated a programme to provide monthly allowances to imams, muazzins and other religious leaders, fulfilling a key electoral pledge of the BNP.

The programme was formally launched at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the morning, according to the BNP media cell.

Alongside mosque officials, the government also introduced similar allowance schemes for priests and temple caretakers as well as principals and vice-principals of Buddhist monasteries.

Earlier, on January 21, the government issued a gazette notification on the Mosque Management Policy 2025, introducing a structured pay scale, service benefits, recruitment rules and welfare provisions for mosque employees across the country.

Under the new policy, a grade-based salary structure has been set for mosque employees, excluding khatibs whose remuneration will be determined through contractual arrangements.

However, financially insolvent mosques and those where five daily prayers are regularly held have been advised to determine salaries and allowances based on their financial capacity.

According to the policy, senior pesh imams will receive salaries under Grade 5, pesh imams under Grade 6 and imams under Grade 9.

The chief muezzin will be paid under Grade 10, muezzins under Grade 11, chief khadems under Grade 15 and khadems under Grade 16.
