The Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) has elected a new executive committee, with Md Manjur Hossain Mahi chosen as president and Liton Islam as general secretary.
The election was held on Tuesday at the association’s office at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka in a festive and peaceful atmosphere.
Md Manjur Hossain Mahi, Dhaka University correspondent for Kaler Kantho, secured the presidency with 30 votes. Liton Islam, correspondent for Star News, was elected general secretary with 24 votes.
Voting took place from 11:50am to 2:30pm, with 41 members casting ballots - 31 directly and 10 through postal votes.
Former DUJA president and Gazipur District Commissioner Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan served as chief election commissioner. He announced the results at around 3pm after the vote count.
Mahathir Mohammed of The Daily Star was elected vice president, while Md Rahad Uddin of Daily Janakantha became joint general secretary. HM Khalid Hasan of Desh Rupantar was elected office secretary and Niemur Rahman Emon of Daily Observer treasurer.
The elected executive members are Md Burhan Uddin of Channel 24, Md Samsuddoza Nabab of Dhaka Tribune, and Mohammad Shahedul Islam of Times of Bangladesh.
The election commission also included DUJA’s former general secretary and Prothom Alo senior reporter Riadul Karim, former general secretary and Daily Ittefaq senior reporter Saidur Rahman, as well as outgoing DUJA president Mohiuddin Mujahid Mahi and general secretary Mahadi Hasan.
Congratulating the new committee, chief election commissioner Nurul Karim Bhuiyan said DUJA has consistently upheld democratic practices and expressed hope that the new leadership would work for the welfare of students and the journalist community.
