Protesting students at Jahangirnagar University have locked the Registrar’s Building, demanding the arrest of the accused in an attempted rape and attempted murder of a female student, as well as the resignation of the university’s proctorial body.
They locked the main gate of the registrar`s building around 10am on Sunday.
The protesting students said that even after five days have passed since the incident, the failure of law enforcement agencies and the university administration to arrest the accused reflects their incompetence.
Adrita Roy, a student from the Department of Drama and Dramatics, said that more than 100 hours have already passed, yet there is still no news of the arrest of the absconding accused. She added that it raises serious questions about whether the administration is properly fulfilling its responsibilities.
She further stated that the students’ six-point demand includes, first and foremost, the immediate arrest of the accused. The locking of the Registrar’s Building was carried out to increase pressure on the authorities to meet this demand. However, the students also said they would allow entry and exit through the building for urgent needs.
Earlier on Saturday, the students had also locked the office of the university’s Proctor, Professor Rashidul Alam, and declared him “unwelcome,” accusing the administration of failing to arrest the accused within 48 hours.
