Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said the trial over the rape and murder of seven-year-old Ramisa in Dhaka’s Pallabi area could be completed within the next five to seven days.
He said the government is determined to ensure the highest punishment for those involved in the crime.
The minister made the remarks while speaking at a dialogue organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum at the Secretariat media centre.
According to the minister, the main accused was arrested within seven hours after the incident and later gave a confessional statement before a court.
He also said the suspect’s wife was detained for allegedly helping in the crime.
Ahmed said investigators completed DNA testing within three days and already received both the forensic and post-mortem reports.
He added that the charge sheet was finalised and scheduled to be submitted to the court on Sunday.
The minister said steps are being taken to ensure a speedy trial despite the court vacation period.
According to him, discussions are underway to cancel the leave of a special court to speed up the proceedings, while a special public prosecutor has already been appointed for the case.
He said the government remains committed to quickly arresting and prosecuting those involved in rape and violence against women and children.
