A seven-day public holiday began on Tuesday as Bangladesh prepares to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, triggering a nationwide travel rush with millions leaving major cities to celebrate the festival with their families in hometowns.

Government offices, courts and many private establishments will remain closed during the extended break, prompting large numbers of people especially from Dhaka-to travel across the country ahead of the festival.

According to the government schedule, Monday (March 16) was the last working day before the Eid holidays.

Subject to moon sighting, Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to be celebrated in Bangladesh on March 20 or March 21.

To facilitate smoother travel during the festive period, the government declared March 18 a public holiday, ensuring that people returning to their hometowns do not face disruption.

The decision followed growing public demand for uninterrupted leave during the Eid period.

The proposal to declare the day a holiday was approved at a cabinet meeting.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on March 8, officially declaring March 18 a general holiday.

As a result, the Eid vacation now runs continuously from March 17 to March 23, giving government employees and many workers a week-long break to celebrate the country’s largest religious festival for Muslims.
