A man accused of attempting to attack senior officials at a Washington gala has been arrested, with US President Donald Trump describing him as “a pretty sick guy.”
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, who was taken into custody at the scene on Saturday night after allegedly opening fire at a security checkpoint.
Officials said the suspect fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent at the Washington Hilton, but the officer escaped serious injury as the bullet struck a protective vest.
The incident triggered a swift security response, with Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials evacuated from the venue.
Investigators said the suspect had sent a manifesto to family members prior to the attack, outlining plans to target government officials. Law enforcement sources said the suspect had also been flagged earlier by relatives over concerning behaviour.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the suspect travelled across multiple states before arriving in Washington and checking into the hotel ahead of the event.
Authorities said he will face federal charges, including assault and attempted killing of a federal officer, with further charges expected.
The attack has renewed concerns over political violence in the United States, following a series of high-profile incidents in recent years.
Officials said investigations are ongoing, while security measures for major public events are likely to be reviewed in the aftermath.
