A former student of Dhaka University who moved to the United States in January to pursue higher studies was shot dead in a robbery at a shop in Beaumont, Texas, on Friday.
The deceased is Sheikh Abir-Hossain, 34, a Lamar University graduate research assistant.
Abir was a store clerk at Kris Food Mart. He was shot by two suspects who fled the scene after stealing cigarettes.
When police arrived, they found Sheikh Abir-Hossain dead from gunshot wounds, reports local TV channel KFDM.
Jahidul Islam, the elder brother of Abir, said that he learned of his brother`s death this afternoon from a relative who resides in New York.
DU Professor Mohammad Shahin Khan expressed his sorrow, saying that Abir left the country because he had always wanted to be a university teacher.
Abir worked as a researcher at Brac University before moving to the US. Later on, he joined as an adjunct faculty member of Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology in Uttara, Dhaka.
He completed both his undergraduate and graduate studies at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research.
Abir`s wife resides in the United States with her family.
Hours after the killing on Saturday, Beaumont police detained a 19-year-old suspect and charged him with murder; they were still searching for the second suspect.
