A Dhaka court on Wednesday cleared cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana Tammi of all charges in a high-profile case that alleged the couple married before Tamima‍‍`s previous marriage had been legally dissolved.

The verdict was delivered by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam, bringing an end to a legal battle that began more than four years ago.

The case was filed in 2021 by Tamima‍‍`s former husband, Rakib Hossain, who claimed that she entered into a marriage with Nasir while her earlier marriage remained legally valid. The complaint drew widespread public attention following the circulation of wedding photographs of Nasir and Tamima on social media.

Court records showed that Tamima and Rakib were married in 2011 and have a daughter together. Rakib later alleged that Tamima married the former Bangladesh national cricketer in February 2020 before completing the legal process related to their previous marriage.

Following an investigation, police submitted charges against Nasir, Tamima and Tamima‍‍`s mother, Sumi Akter, in 2021. However, the court later discharged Sumi from the case and proceeded with charges against Nasir and Tamima.

Several legal challenges were filed by both sides during the proceedings, but higher courts ultimately allowed the trial to continue.

The trial formally began in 2023, with the court hearing testimony from 10 witnesses before concluding the evidence phase in April this year.

During the proceedings, both Nasir and Tamima denied the allegations. Tamima told the court that she had legally ended her marriage with Rakib before marrying Nasir and described the breakdown of her previous marriage as the result of longstanding incompatibility.

After reviewing the evidence and witness testimony, the court acquitted the couple, ending the case that had remained under judicial scrutiny for years.

The verdict removes the possibility of criminal penalties that could have been imposed had the charges been proven in court.
