Mother‍‍`s vacation causes child‍‍`s death, leading to life sentence

Kristel Candelario vacationed in Puerto Rico and Detroit while her 16-month old was alone in a playpen for 10 days. She was sentenced Monday to life in prison

In Cleveland, little Jailyn cried alone in her playpen unaware that her mom Kristel Candelario was hundreds of miles away, enjoying a summer vacation in Puerto Rico.

Prosecutors revealed the harrowing details of Jailyn‍‍`s final days, recounting how she was left unattended with only bottles of milk for sustenance. Surveillance footage captured the heart-wrenching moments of her distress, a stark reminder of the abandonment she suffered.

Upon her return, Candelario discovered her daughter‍‍`s lifeless body, marking the end of a 10-day absence that ended in tragedy. Last month, she pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated murder and child endangerment.

During the sentencing, forensic pathologist Elizabeth Mooney shed light on the anguish Jailyn endured, emphasizing the prolonged suffering caused by neglect and deprivation.

In a courtroom filled with emotion, Judge Brendan Sheehan delivered a scathing condemnation of Candelario‍‍`s actions, branding them as the ultimate betrayal of maternal duty. He handed down a sentence of life in prison without parole, ensuring that she would face the consequences of her actions.

Law enforcement officials, visibly moved by the proceedings, struggled to contain their grief as they grappled with the magnitude of Jailyn‍‍`s death. Lead detective T.J. Powell paid tribute to the young victim with a poignant poem, underscoring the injustice of her untimely demise and the need for accountability in the face of such tragedy.
