A Dhaka court has granted a seven-day remand for four individuals, including Abdur Razzak (alias Riyad), in connection with an alleged extortion attempt at the residence of former Member of Parliament Shammi Ahmed in the capital`s Gulshan area.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka issued the remand order on Sunday following a police petition. The other three accused granted remand are Sakdown Siam, Sadman Sadab, and Ibrahim Hossain.
Earlier, police presented five suspects, including Razzak, before the court, seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation.
The defense opposed the remand request and instead sought bail. After hearing both sides, the court approved seven days of remand for four accused. The fifth suspect, being a minor, was sent to the Tongi Juvenile Development Center.
According to a submission by Gulshan Police, the accused had been using the title of "coordinator" to intimidate people and collect extortion money. Police stated that their custodial interrogation is essential to uncover the full details of the incident.
Investigators further informed the court that on July 17, Abdur Razzak (Riyad), known as a leader of the United Private University Convener Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and Kazi Gaurav Apu went to the residence of Shammi Ahmed and demanded BDT 5 million in extortion.
They allegedly threatened arrest if the money was not paid. Shammi Ahmed`s husband reportedly gave them BDT 1 million.
On Saturday, the group returned to demand more money, at which point police intervened and arrested five individuals, including Razzak.
