Metro transports 3.35 lakh passengers in first month of opening

Bangladesh’s first metro rail through Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 transported around 3,35,000 passengers in the first month of opening since December 28 last year.

M A N Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) notified about the development on Tuesday, also adding that metro rail authorities earned Tk2.46 crore till Monday while weekly closure was only four days during the time-frame.

Ahead of the opening of the nation's first underground metro rail (MRT Line-1) construction work on February 2, which will be inaugurated by the premier Sheikh Hasina from a program at Purbachal area, Siddique briefed media at DMTCL office.

Siddique said they have coordinated with the expressway authority from the beginning and three to four metres of land was kept free on the median of the expressway, adding that "We will take around 1.5 metre land for metro rail, so, no road has to be broken down for the work."

The metro rail started its first journey, the day after its inauguration, with passengers via the elevated route between 8am and 12pm everyday except for weekly closures.

It started picking up and releasing passengers from the Pallabi stop, which falls between Uttara and Agargaon stations from January.
