Fresh violence erupted on Monday at Geneva Camp in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur, home to stranded Pakistanis, amid an ongoing drug-related turf war.
According to Mohammadpur Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Mehedi Hasan, two groups clashed with sticks and sharp weapons in Sector 7 after noon, leaving 20-year-old Shah Alam dead from stab wounds.
Police arrested two suspects — Faisal, who was caught with a machete, and another man named Selim.
A local schoolteacher said the unrest began in the early hours of the day, with repeated chases, brick-throwing, and several crude bomb explosions. The previous night, a woman was injured in a blast.
“When police and the army come, things calm down, but the drug dealers resume fighting after they leave,” he added.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan said the violence stems from a long-running feud between two drug gangs led by “Pichchi Raja” and “Buniya Sohel.” Both leaders were recently released on bail after being arrested in previous crackdowns.
“The conflict is over control of the drug trade,” Mizan said. “We are working to restore order, and the situation is currently under control.”
Police note that similar gang clashes in 2024 claimed multiple lives, prompting a major law enforcement operation. Many of those arrested then are now back on the streets and resuming their old turf battles.
