Low-lying lands in Zakiganj Upazila in Sylhet has been submerged as a dyke at the source of Surma and Kushiara rivers have been shattered due to the onrush of upstream water.
The flood situation worsened after the embankment eroded around 12.30 am Thursday night.
The local administration said, the dam on the borderline Borak river has collapsed due to heavy currents and upstream water inundating several areas in Zakiganj including Fillakandi, Omolshid, Barthakuri, Khasirchak, Khairchak, Baroghatta and Sonasar. Besides, the communication link between Jokiganj and Omolshid was snapped.
The water level is increasing at various points in nine unions and one municipality of the Upazila. Water from the Borak river of India is flowing to Surma and Kushiara rivers at high speed.
Zakiganj’s acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Pallab Hom Das said, water is entering at high speed in Surma and Kushiara rivers after the dam collapsed inundating new areas of the Upazila. He also feared swelling water at other parts of Sylhet district and division.
