Five people, including four members of the same family, were killed when a train collided with an autorickshaw at a level crossing in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Saturday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 1:30 PM at the Dhalirchhara rail crossing in Rashidnagar Union, confirmed Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tayebur Rahman.
The deceased have been identified as Asmaul Hosna (27), her sister Renu Akter (13), Asmaul’s two children—Ata Ullah (1) and Asheq Ullah (3)—and the autorickshaw driver Habib Ullah. They were residents of Bharuakhali in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila.
According to their father Jafar Alam, Asmaul and her two children, along with her sister Renu, were traveling from their family home to Asmaul’s in-laws’ house in Kalirchhara, Ramu. Their autorickshaw was attempting to cross the railway line when it was struck by a train bound for Chattogram. All five passengers, including the driver, died on the spot.
Acting Chairman of Rashidnagar Union Parishad, Abdul Malek Masum, said that the autorickshaw was hit and mangled by a train that had departed from Cox’s Bazar, resulting in the instant deaths of both the driver and passengers.
