BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan today expressed optimism that Bangladesh`s relationship with the United States will remain strong under Donald Trump`s presidency, reports The Daily Star.
"We believe that the governments of both countries are democratically supported. So, we do not anticipate any significant changes in the relationship between the two governments or their countries," Nazrul told reporters after a meeting with a delegation from Khelafat Majlis at the BNP Chairperson`s Gulshan office.
The nine-member delegation, led by Khelafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Abdul Basit Azad, held an hour-long meeting with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Nazrul Islam Khan.
When asked about the potential impact of Trump`s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States on US-Bangladesh ties, Nazrul said individual leaders have limited influence over state policymaking.
"But America is a country where the president wields significant power and influence. Even so, we do not think the change in presidency will have much impact on Bangladesh`s relationship with the United States," he said.
Nazrul, also a BNP standing committee member, said that the transfer of power occurs in democratic systems with the people`s support.
"Just as the change in leadership happened here with the people`s mandate, the shift in state power there (in the US) also took place through the people`s votes," he said.
Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday. In his inaugural address, he declared, "The golden age of America begins right now."
