As Bangladesh is all set to get its 12th parliament, the country on Sunday went to the latest general election to elect 299 lawmakers as the vote in one constituency was previously suspended after an aspirant’s death.

And, by 9 pm, it was already made public that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won her eighth term as a lawmaker.

She is now followed by two ruling party MPs – Md Abdus Shahid and Mirza Azam -- both winning their seventh bid in the much-hyped polls.

With a fairly medium voter turnout amid reports of sporadic clashes and vote rigging, the Election Commission started to announce the unofficial results in the evening. The voting took place between 8 am and 4 pm without any break.

Also, the Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina was elected in the Gopalganj-3 constituency.

Returning Officer and Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner Kazi Mahbubul Alam announced the results at 8.30 pm.

Sheikh Hasina bagged 2,49,962 votes while her closest contestant Bangladesh Supreme Party candidate M Nizamuddin Laskar got only 469 votes.

Gopalganj-3 constituency encompasses Tungipara and Kotalipara upazila with 2,90,300 votes.

Vice-Principal and former whip Md Abdus Shahid came victorious from the Moulvibazar-4 (Kamalganj-Srimangal) constituency.

He got 212,491 votes compared to only 5,390 ballots received by his nearest candidate Md Anwar Hossain of Bangladesh Islami Front.

Awami League Organising Secretary Mirza Azam won from the Jamalpur-3 (Madarganj- Melandah) seat.

Azam bagged 276,453 votes while his closest contender Mir Shamsul Alam of Jatiya Party got merely 7,470 votes.
