Army to be deployed for JU student union elections: Election Commission

The Election Commission of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has decided to deploy the army on campus as a “striking force” to ensure security during the upcoming central and hall student union elections.

The deployment will cover three days – the day before, the day of, and the day after the elections.

The decision was confirmed on Thursday morning by the university’s proctor and member-secretary of the Election Commission, A.K.M. Rashidul Alam.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “To ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the JU elections, the administration has taken several measures. Discussions have been held with nearby institutions to strengthen campus security, and the army will be deployed as a striking force to prevent any untoward incidents.”

Registrar A.B.M. Azizur Rahman also confirmed that the university administration sent a letter to the army chief on August 13, following a written request from the Election Commission regarding army deployment.

The JU student union election, to be held on September 11, will take place after a gap of 33 years.

Today, August 21, marks the final day for submission of nomination papers for both the central and hall student union elections.
