A Dhaka court has granted discharge to 65 individuals, including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, in a case filed over a cocktail bomb incident.
On Thursday, August 21, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib accepted the final report and issued the discharge order. Additional Public Prosecutor Rafiqul Islam Khan confirmed the development at the court.
Notable figures among those discharged include BNP Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Barkat Ullah Bulu, former Home Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Joint Secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Zainul Abedin Farooq, BNP leader Engineer Ishrak Hossain, and International Affairs Secretary Barrister Nasir Uddin, among others.
According to the case, on October 28, 2023, BNP held a pre-announced grand rally in Dhaka, drawing party leaders and activists from across the country to the Ramna Thana area. During the rally, vehicles were reportedly damaged and police operations were obstructed.
Following the incident, on October 31, 2023, SI Awal of Ramna Police Station filed the case, naming 55 individuals, including Mirza Fakhrul.
On October 21, 2024, investigation officer Sub-Inspector Mamun Hasan submitted two final reports in court recommending discharge for 65 individuals, including Mirza Fakhrul.
Later, on December 18 of the same year, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka accepted the final report and granted discharge.
The final report under the Explosives Act was subsequently transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
