A Bangladeshi-American medical physicist is all set to receive the 2023 William D Coolidge Gold Medal Award from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
Prof Dr M Saiful Huq, who was elected the president of the platform, is the awardee.
This award is for an AAPM member who has made significant scientific and professional contributions to the advancement of medical physics, has had a significant influence in advancing the careers of other medical physicists, and has demonstrated leadership skills in national or international organisations.
It is the highest honour given by the AAPM for a distinguished career in medical physics.
Dr Huq is the first Bangladeshi-American to receive this award, which will be given to him ceremonially at the annual meeting of the AAPM to be held in Houston, Texas on July 24, 2023.
He was the 5th person from South Asia to become AAPM president who is not a native born American, in mid-2018.
The AAPM has a global membership of around 10,000 medical physicists with the mission of improving health via medical physics and advancing medicine through excellence in scientific education and medical physics professional practice.
Dr Huq was AAPM's president in 2020 and its chairman of the board of directors in 2021. He continues to set the standard for the rest of the medical physics community.
It can be mentioned that Dr Huq did his BSc (Hons) and MSc in Physics from Dhaka University (1969-1976) and PhD from William & Mary (1977-1984) in the US.
Dr Huq is the younger brother of Annisul Huq, the late mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, and the elder brother of former Chief of Army Staff Gen (retd) ABM Shafiul Huq.
