Shahbagh rally draws growing crowds as Chhatra Dal leaders and activists gather

Leaders and activists of BNP’s student wing, Chhatra Dal, are arriving in large numbers at Shahbagh to attend a rally marking the anniversary of the July mass uprising.

As the day progresses, the crowd continues to grow around the stage set up facing TSC. The central leaders of Chhatra Dal are already present, with the main program scheduled to begin at 2 PM.

Access roads to the rally site — including routes from Shahbagh to Katabon, the Intercontinental intersection, Shahbagh Police Station, and Matsya Bhaban — have been closed, causing traffic disruptions.

However, ambulances heading to nearby hospitals like BSMMU and Dhaka Medical are being allowed through.

Participants, many wearing headbands and flags bearing Chhatra Dal and BNP symbols, are chanting slogans such as “The soil and mothers call, Tarique Rahman is coming” and “We are not afraid — the streets are still ours.”

Leaders from outside Dhaka have also joined, expressing hope that Tarique Rahman will deliver guidance for the youth and the nation.

The rally will feature a virtual address by Tarique Rahman and speeches by senior BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The central Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam is presiding over the event, with General Secretary Nasir Uddin moderating.

Meanwhile, the road closures have caused significant public inconvenience, particularly for patients and families heading to medical facilities in the area.
