Cricinfo tops list of gambling advertisers, adviser warns of possible ban

Popular cricket website Cricinfo.com has been identified as the leading platform promoting online gambling advertisements in Bangladesh’s cyberspace, according to Faiez Ahmed Taiyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications, and ICT.

In a Facebook post late Monday night, Faiez Ahmed said that Cricinfo is allegedly violating the Cyber Security Act 2025 by running unauthorized gambling advertisements targeting Bangladeshi audiences.

He warned that if such activities continue, the government may consider blocking the website in Bangladesh.

“Online gambling and its advertisement or promotion are prohibited under Bangladesh’s Cyber Security Act, 2025,” Faiez Ahmed wrote.

He added that the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) reviewed Cricinfo’s advertising across several countries, including Australia and England, and found no gambling-related content in those regions. However, the agency discovered that Cricinfo runs such ads only in Bangladesh, in direct violation of local law.

The adviser also noted that Cricinfo has not paid any tax or VAT to the Bangladeshi government on income generated from these illegal advertisements, either before or after the law came into effect.

To address the issue, the NCSA has already sent an email notice to Cricinfo demanding that the advertisements be removed, and a registered letter will follow.

Faiez Ahmed further stated that if Cricinfo fails to comply, the government will seek public opinion on whether the platform should be blocked in Bangladesh to protect users from exposure to illegal online gambling content.
