England captain Harry Kane said he was proud of his team‍‍`s resilience after they battled past Mexico in a tense World Cup last-16 clash at the Estadio Azteca.

England had to play a large part of the match under pressure after defender Jarell Quansah was sent off for a high challenge.

Kane said the team had been forced to dig deep in a difficult atmosphere, describing the match as a test of character.

"It was a crazy game. We had to fight and we had to find something," Kane said.

Jude Bellingham scored twice in 98 seconds during the first half to put England in control, but Mexico were handed a route back into the match after Bellingham conceded a penalty following a VAR review.

Kane later converted from the spot on the hour mark to help England secure the win.

The England captain said several decisions had gone against his side, but added that the result mattered most.

"The occasion, the team, everything was against us, but we found a way," Kane said.
