At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured after Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine‍‍`s Kyiv region early Monday, hours before NATO leaders gather for a summit in Turkey.

Ukrainian authorities said 10 people were killed in Kyiv and one in the nearby Bucha district, while at least 61 others were injured across the capital and surrounding areas.

Residents were jolted awake by multiple explosions as Russia fired ballistic missiles and drones at the region. Fires broke out in several residential buildings, with emergency crews rushing to rescue survivors and extinguish the flames.

Kyiv regional military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko said four residential buildings caught fire during the attack, describing them as places "where people were simply sleeping."

Russia‍‍`s Defence Ministry said it had carried out a "massive strike" targeting military-industrial facilities and energy infrastructure in several Ukrainian regions.

The latest assault came less than a week after another major attack on the Ukrainian capital, as both sides continue to intensify long-range strikes.

In Russian-annexed Crimea, authorities said a Ukrainian strike temporarily disrupted electricity supplies near Sevastopol before power was restored through backup systems.

Moscow also reported intercepting multiple Ukrainian drones targeting the Russian capital. Russia‍‍`s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems shot down 519 Ukrainian drones across more than 20 regions overnight.

The escalation comes ahead of a NATO summit in Ankara, where US President Donald Trump is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday to discuss the war.

According to the White House, Trump also plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin after the summit as Washington seeks to revive stalled diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

Meanwhile, fighting continues on the battlefield. President Zelensky said Ukrainian forces were still defending the strategic eastern town of Kostyantynivka despite Russia‍‍`s claim that it had captured the area.
