When the match seemed headed for extra time without a goal, captain Stephen Eustaquio produced a moment of brilliance. In the second minute of stoppage time, his stunning strike secured a 1–0 victory over South Africa, sending Canada into the Round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time in their history.
The match in Los Angeles was closely contested, with both teams starting aggressively. Early exchanges were somewhat disjointed, though South Africa nearly struck in the third minute when Oswin Appollis wasted a promising chance with a poor first touch.
Canada gradually took control. In the sixth minute, South African midfielder Teboho Mokoena tested goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau with a long-range effort, but it was comfortably saved. From then on, Canada increased pressure through corners and set pieces.

Canada continued to push late in the first half. In the 44th minute, Moise Bombito’s powerful header from a corner was cleared off the line by Khuliso Mudau in a brilliant defensive intervention. Richie Laryea’s follow-up effort was also blocked by Williams. Canada appealed strongly for a penalty in stoppage time after Laryea went down in the box, but the referee waved play on and VAR did not overturn the decision, leaving the match 0–0 at halftime.
In the second half, Canada maintained their attacking momentum. In the 64th minute, Tani Oluwaseyi was denied by a goal-line clearance from Siyabonga Mbokazi after a fine assist from Ismael Kone.
Alphonso Davies was introduced in the 75th minute, immediately increasing Canada’s attacking intensity. Within a minute, his involvement created a chance for Promise David, whose shot went just wide. Two minutes later, Davies set up Jonathan David, but Williams again made the save.
South Africa, meanwhile, struggled to create meaningful chances, managing only a few openings. Appollis had a weak effort comfortably saved in the 85th minute.
Just when the match looked destined for extra time, the decisive moment arrived. In the second minute of added time, after South Africa cleared their lines, Eustaquio picked up the loose ball outside the box and struck a first-time shot into the bottom-left corner. Williams had no chance.
