PM orders measures to protect Gulshan Lake, improve waste management

The Prime Minister has directed the relevant authorities to take necessary steps to protect the environment of the Gulshan–Banani–Baridhara Lake, prevent water pollution, and ensure an integrated waste management system.

She issued the instruction this morning at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat. The meeting focused on reviewing the sewerage connection systems of buildings in the Gulshan–Banani–Baridhara–Niketan area and the overall efforts to clean up and decontaminate the lake.

Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Hasan Shilpu, conveyed the information.

He said the Prime Minister emphasized coordinated efforts among relevant ministries, city corporations, and responsible agencies to remove waste from the lake, control water pollution, and preserve the environment.

Officials informed the Prime Minister that short-, medium-, and long-term plans have been taken to clean the lake. As part of these measures, urgent action is needed to stop sewage from buildings that is directly flowing into the lake.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of establishing a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to protect the environment of the Gulshan–Banani–Baridhara Lake. Discussions further covered regular cleaning of the lake and its connected canals, waste removal, and maintaining proper water flow.

The issue of preventing waste from the nearby Karail slum from directly entering the lake was also discussed, including possible action plans to address it, according to Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shilpu.

Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Suman, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahmad Sohel Monjur, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Milton, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) Chairman Riazul Islam, secretaries of relevant ministries and senior officials attended the meeting.
