The names of 13 public universities in Bangladesh that were once named after the Sheikh family have now been changed.
The new names mostly reflect the districts where these universities are located.
The decision was announced on Thursday, January 16, by Asif Mahmud, the Adviser for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, via his official Facebook page.
According to his post, the university formerly known as Sheikh Hasina University is now called Netrokona University.
Similarly, the University of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Naogaon has been renamed Naogaon University.
The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Gopalganj has now been changed to Gopalganj Science and Technology University.
In Chittagong, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University is now Maritime University Bangladesh, and the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University is now simply the Aviation and Aerospace University.
The University of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology in Pirojpur is now called Pirojpur Science and Technology University.
Also, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Narayanganj is now known as Narayanganj Science and Technology University.
In other changes, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishoreganj is now Kishoreganj University, and Mujibnagar University in Meherpur is now Meherpur University.
The name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in Gazipur has been altered to Gazipur Agricultural University, and the one in Shariatpur is now Shariatpur Agricultural University.
The name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University, Bangladesh, has also been changed to ‘Bangladesh Digital University.’
Finally, the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University in Jamalpur has been renamed Jamalpur Science and Technology University.
