Former JU teacher Mahmudur arrested in murder case

Police have arrested Mahmudur Rahman, a former teacher at Jahangirnagar University and ex-president of the university unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, in connection with a murder case. He was detained around 3 am on Friday night from the Bank Town area of Savar.

The arrest was confirmed by Jewel Miah, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station. He said Mahmudur was shown arrested in a case filed over a murder that took place during an anti-discrimination student movement in Savar.

According to university sources, Mahmudur Rahman, also known as Jony (36), had served as an assistant professor at the Department of Public Health and Informatics. He also held the position of assistant proctor. In 2023, he was dismissed from the university on charges of moral turpitude.

During his student life, Mahmudur was actively involved in politics and served as the president of the Jahangirnagar University unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League from 2012 to 2016.
