Security forces arrested 20 people in overnight raids in different parts of Chattogram city in connection with the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.
The murder happened during violent clashes over the arrest of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Bramachari, a former ISKCON leader who has been charged with sedition.
Kotwali Police Station`s Officer-in-Charge, Fazlul Kader, confirmed that the arrests took place in the areas of Patharghata Mathar Potti, Andarkilla, and Hazari Goli, between Tuesday evening and midnight. Saiful Islam was killed in the middle of a violent situation involving police, angry protesters, and supporters of Chinmoy Krishna, after the priest`s bail request was denied.
The joint security forces continued operations across the city late into the night on Tuesday, but police said that no official case had been filed yet for the lawyer’s murder.
Md. Nazim Uddin, General Secretary of the Chattogram District Bar Association, said Saiful Islam’s autopsy was completed by Wednesday morning.
His funeral prayers (namaz-e-janaza) will take place at 10 am at the court premises, followed by a second prayer at 11 am at the Jamiatul Falah National Mosque. The final prayer will be held after the afternoon prayer (Asr) at his family home in Lohagara.
In response to the murder, the Chattogram District Bar Association has called for a boycott of court activities on Wednesday, demanding that those responsible for Saiful Islam’s killing be arrested.
