The fifth day of appeal hearing on candidacy in the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election is under way, began this morning at 10am.
The hearing is being held at the auditorium of the Election Commission (EC) building in Agargaon here against the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers by returning officers.
According to the EC schedule, 100 appeals numbered 281 to 380 will be heard today. The commission will take up appeals 281 to 330 from 10 am to 1 pm, followed by a one-hour lunch break, and then hear appeals 331 to 380 from 2 pm to 5 pm.
The full commission, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin, is conducting the hearing.
According to the EC timetable, hearings for appeals numbered 381 to 480 will be held on January 15 from 10 am to 5 pm, while appeals 481 to 510 and pending cases will be heard on January 16 from 3 pm to 5 pm.
Hearings for appeals 511 to 610 will be conducted on January 17, and appeals 611 to 645 along with remaining pending cases will conclude the process on January 18.
On the fourth day of the hearing yesterday, 53 candidates regained their nominations.
EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told BSS that a total of 70 appeals were heard on the fourth day, of which 53 were accepted and 17 rejected.
EC officials said that after the first four days of hearing, a total of 203 candidates have regained their nominations, including 51 on the first day, 58 on the second, 41 on the third, and 53 on the fourth day.
A total of 645 appeals have been filed with the EC against the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers in this election. On January 4, returning officers had declared 723 nomination papers invalid after scrutiny.
While 70 appeals were disposed of daily during the first four days, the number of appeals being heard has been increased from today. According to the revised EC schedule, 100 appeals will now be heard daily except on Friday.
