Former adviser of defunct caretaker government Dr. Akbar Ali Khan has blasted over the formation of Election Commission (EC) amid the ongoing President’s dialogue regarding the formulation.
Forming a search committee would bring no profit. Who would be the commissioners has already been listed. They are going to be appointed as commissioners whether the search committee recommends or not, Akbar Ali Khan said.
Akbar Ali Khan was speaking as a chief guest at a shadow parliament debate orgnaised by Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in the capital on Saturday.
Censuring the Nurul Huda-led EC he said, “Many elections were held under the incumbent commission. EC claimed to hold these polls in line with the law. And, the civil society thinks the law which legitimizes such voting is not a law at all.”
“The Huda commission could have implemented the legal provisions appropriately to hold a ‘good’ election and protect the civic rights,” the noted economist of the country furthered.
The tenure of five-member EC led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda will end February 14.
The new commission will take office the next day.
President Abdul Hamid has called registered political parties for dialogue seeking a recommendation to form a search committee for the formulation of a new election commission.
