All army personnel involved in the operation have been withdrawn following the death of a BNP leader in army custody in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Tuesday.
A high-level investigation committee has been formed to determine the actual cause of the incident and to take appropriate action, said a press release of ISPR on Tuesday.
According to an ISPR statement, based on intelligence information, a special operation was conducted by a joint force in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district around 11 pm on Monday.
During the operation, Shamsuzzaman Dablu, 50, was arrested from a pharmacy adjacent to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex on suspicion of possessing illegal weapons.
The team also searched the pharmacy and recovered one 9mm pistol, one magazine and four rounds of ammunition, said the ISPR release.
At one stage, Dablu suddenly fell ill and became unconscious, and he was immediately taken to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex.
Later, around 12:25 am, the on-duty doctor declared him dead, it said.
Terming the incident as regrettable and unacceptable, all military personnel, including the camp commander, involved in the operation have already been withdrawn, and a high-level investigation committee has been formed to unearth the exact cause, it said.
Legal action will be taken against those found guilty in accordance with military law, it added.
Shamsuzzaman Dablu, 50, general secretary of Chuadanga municipality unit BNP and a resident of Hospitalpara, died on Monday midnight after being taken into custody during an army operation near Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex.
