The Bangladesh Army stated that it was compelled to use force in self-defense during the recent unrest in Gopalganj.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a press release on Thursday (July 17), calling on the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as the situation stabilizes.
According to the ISPR, the violence stemmed from a political rally organized as part of a party`s July procession program.
On Wednesday (July 16), a group of unruly individuals carried out terrorist activities in Gopalganj Sadar upazila. During the chaos, several police officers and journalists were injured. Additionally, key government installations and vehicles were vandalized and set on fire.
The situation deteriorated rapidly, prompting immediate intervention by both the Bangladesh Army and local police to bring the situation under control.
While the political rally was ongoing, attackers targeted the rally stage again and launched a violent attack on the district jail, causing extensive damage.
The Army attempted to de-escalate the situation by making repeated loudspeaker announcements urging the attackers to stand down.
However, the assailants responded by hurling a large number of crude bombs and bricks at the Army personnel. In response, the Army had to resort to force to protect themselves.
Eventually, a joint operation by the Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and police dispersed the unruly crowd.
Individuals who had taken shelter at the office of the Superintendent of Police in Gopalganj were later relocated to Khulna under the supervision of the Army.
The ISPR emphasized that law enforcement agencies acted professionally and with patience to restore public safety and bring the situation under control.
Currently, the overall security situation in Gopalganj is stable, with a government-imposed curfew still in effect.
The Army further stated that the Army, BGB, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and other administrative bodies are closely coordinating to maintain law and order.
The public of Gopalganj has shown great restraint throughout the violence and has supported the Army in managing the situation.
Authorities urged citizens not to be misled by rumors or misinformation and to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
The Bangladesh Army reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country`s sovereignty and public safety.
