The court has awarded eight years jail term to former state minister for home, Lutfuzzaman Babar, in a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over amassing illegal assets and hiding information.
Judge Mohammed Shahidul Islam of Dhaka special court-7 passed the order on Tuesday (October 12).
Earlier on October 4, the court fixed today to deliver the verdict concluding the hearing.
The case was filed against the former BNP lawmaker on January 13, 2008.
ACC assistant director of Chattogram district-1 office, Mirza Jahidul Alam, filed the case with Ramna police station in the capital. After sufficient inquiries, another ACC assistant director Rupak Kumar Saha pressed the charge-sheet on July 16 the same year.
According to the charge-sheet, Babar was accused of possessing an illegal asset worth taka 7 crore 5 lakh 91 thousand 896 while he submitted a wealth statement of taka 6 crore 77 lakh 31 thousand 312 to the anti-corruption body.
The August 21 grenade attack case convict was arrested by the joint force on May 28, 2007, during the reign of the caretaker government led by Dr Fakharuddin Ahmed. He was appointed as the state minister for home affairs during the four-party alliance regime.
