Bangladeshi killed in mob beating in India

A Bangladeshi man was killed in a mob beating at a border village in Jalpaiguri district of India's West Bengal state.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when he was caught allegedly trying to steal cows from a house, police sources said.

A group of Bangladeshi men crossed over to India on Tuesday night for allegedly stealing cows from a house in Barua Para in Kukurjan area of Rajganj block in Jalpaiguri, reports TDS quoting police sources.

All members of the group, except one, managed to return to Bangladesh when locals chased them. The one left behind, identified as Md Salam of Panchagarh district in Bangladesh, fled to a nearby tea garden after he failed to cross the border, they said.

The local people waited for him throughout the night, and at daybreak, got hold of him and allegedly beat him to death, police said.

"When the gang was chased, they fled leaving behind the cows. All of them crossed the border back to Bangladesh, except one. He died after being beaten up. Cows were stolen from our village earlier as well," said Nripen Roy, whose house was allegedly targeted by the group of Bangladeshis.

Three persons were arrested in connection with the death, the sources added.

"Some people have been arrested in connection with the lynching. Rajganj Police Station has been asked to investigate the case," Jalpaiguri district Superintendent of Police Debarshi Dutta said.
