A sub-inspector (SI) of Barishal's Kotwali Police Station, Abul Basher, has been arrested for reportedly raping a woman in a hotel in the city.
Basher was the in-charge of Steamerghat Police Outpost under the police station, said OC Azimul Karim.
The arrest was made following a case filed by the victim with the police station and he was produced before a court on Saturday, added the OC.
According to the case document, on October 5, 2022, the SI got introduced with the woman over a complaint and exchanged mobile numbers.
On October 13, 2022, the victim called the SI to consult with him about a complaint.
"The SI asked her current location. When she informed him about the location, the SI rushed to the spot and took her to a hotel room and raped her there," the case statement said.
A case was filed against the SI as per direction of Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Saiful Islam, the OC added.
Sources said there are also extortion allegations against the SI.
Earlier, he was temporarily suspended over assaulting a journalist while working at Detective Branch.
