BSMMU gets department of gender transformation

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has introduced the Department of Sex Development for the advanced treatment of third sex children. Through this initiative, children of the third sex can be transformed into full-fledged women or men through treatment.

BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed inaugurated the external department on Sunday (November 21). 

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sharfuddin Ahmed said, “Society is not much aware about transgender people. In society, those who are known as Hijras can transform into full-fledged women or men through treatment if they wish to. However, for this, the doctors of the pediatric surgery department should be consulted in childhood. In addition, parents, pediatricians and neonates must come forward in this regard.

Highlighting the reasons for setting up the clinic, the president of the program and chairman of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Prof. Dr. AKM Zahid Hossain said, “Children born with immature or defective sex including third sex can be converted to either men or women through necessary treatment including surgery according to physical phenotype or external reproductive organs.
