The International Crimes Tribunal has accepted charges of crimes against humanity against former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman and seven other police personnel in connection with the killing of six people during the July uprising in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area.
An arrest warrant has also been issued for Habibur Rahman.
According to the charges, on August 5, police opened fire on protesters following direct orders from Habibur Rahman, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including student activist Anas.
While four accused are currently in custody, the rest remain at large. Other accused include former senior officers from DMP.
Investigators discovered an audio recording of Habibur Rahman ordering lethal force via wireless communication.
Though the charge sheet notes the involvement of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in planning and command roles, they have not been named as accused due to ongoing investigations.
If charges are formally framed, this will mark the first official trial related to the July uprising.
