Cumilla: Gas cylinder blast injures 50; dozens of children among injured

A gas cylinder explosion in Cumilla's Nangalkot upazila injured at least 50 people on Thursday. Out of the 50 injured, 38 people are in critical condition.

38 people with critical injuries out of the 50 injured are receiving treatment at Cumilla General Hospital.

However, no casualties have been reported so far.

Upazila Health Officer Deb Das confirmed the matter to the press.

He said a group of youths tried to inflate a balloon by connecting it to a gas cylinder at Birulia village of the upazila around 6:00 pm.

“At the time, many villagers gathered at the place in a crowd. Suddenly, the cylinder exploded, injuring dozens in their heads and eyes,” he added.

At least 41 injured were first taken to Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex. However, as the condition of 38 people was critical, they were referred to Comilla General Hospital.

No arrests have been made in connection to the incident yet, said Faruq Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of the local police station.
