The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned that May could bring volatile weather, including possible cyclones, extreme heatwaves, and nor’westers, according to its monthly forecast released today.
The outlook indicates that the Bay of Bengal may see the formation of one to three low-pressure systems, with one or two potentially strengthening into depressions and developing into cyclonic storms.
Additionally, the BMD predicts two to three moderate to severe nor’westers (Kalbaishakhi storms) this month, along with three to five days of thunderstorms accompanied by hail.
One or two severe heatwaves are expected to hit different parts of the country, pushing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Night-time temperatures are also expected to remain elevated throughout the month.
Rainfall is projected to be near normal overall, but isolated heavy showers could cause temporary rises in water levels in rivers across northern, northeastern, and southern regions. However, river flow is expected to stay within typical limits.
May is generally one of the stormiest and second hottest months in Bangladesh, often marked by unstable weather. In recent years, major cyclones such as Cyclone Mocha (May 14, 2023) and Cyclone Remal (May 26) struck in May, causing significant damage across multiple coastal districts.
