Customs officials have detained a Bangladesh-born US citizen with some 59 gold bars at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Preventive Unit of the Dhaka Custom House Md Sanwarul Kabir said the gold bars they seized from the woman was estimated to be worth about Tk 5 crore.
He said the 55-year-old woman was identified as Shahanaz Choudhury while she landed in Dhaka as a passenger of an Emirates Airlines flight.
"Acting on secret information, our team conducted a search operation and rescued 59 gold bars, each weighing 6.8 kilograms from her possession," Kabir added.
"Preparedness is underway to lodge cases against her under CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) and Customs Act to expose her to justice," said the official.
