EC proposes mandatory NID for government job recruitment

The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has proposed making the National Identity Card (NID) mandatory for all government job recruitments.

The EC’s NID wing has also recommended incorporating this requirement into the legal framework governing public administration.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, NID Wing Director General ASM Humayun Kabir stated that the initiative aims to streamline the salary and benefits disbursement process for government employees.

He noted that both the NID law and the Integrated Budget and Accounting System (IBAS++) already require NID usage, and thus, all public agencies should adhere to this standard in future recruitments.

On Monday, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed held a meeting with representatives from 27 ministries, departments, and agencies that still do not require NID during recruitment.

DG Humayun Kabir shared the progress of that discussion, highlighting that many government employees who seek corrections in their NID records are already linked to the IBAS++ system, which has made NID verification crucial for salary processing.

Kabir mentioned that some offices have warned employees their salaries may be withheld if NID issues are not resolved.

In such cases, employees face delays and confusion while moving between IBAS++ and their respective HR offices, often eventually turning to the EC for help.

However, direct correction is not always feasible, and in some cases, clearance cannot be given immediately.

The EC emphasized the need for a legal mandate from the Ministry of Public Administration to avoid future complications and ensure consistent application of NID requirements across all government agencies.
