Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel has voiced a firm stance, calling for a permanent ban on individuals who refuse to participate under the jurisdiction of women umpires in cricket matches.
Taking to Facebook on Sunday, April 28, the Minister emphasized the importance of inclusivity in sports, stating, "If any cricketer refuses to participate in the game under a female umpire, those cricketers should be banned forever from domestic and international cricket by the ICC!" He further added, "Sports are not for them. Wild animals are beautiful in forests, children are in mother`s womb, and dinosaurs belong in prehistoric times!"
The controversy stems from the recent match between Prime Bank and Mohammedan on Thursday, April 25, where Sathira Zakir JC and Moniruzzaman officiated as on-field umpires. Allegations have surfaced suggesting objections from both teams regarding the appointment of women umpires for the match between Mohammedan, currently ranking second in the league, and Prime Bank, positioned fifth.
The incident has sparked discussions and criticisms across various circles, highlighting the ongoing debate surrounding gender equality and representation in sports officiating.
