BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed deep sorrow over the casualties and damage caused by the strong earthquake that struck the country this morning.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the earthquake,” Fakhrul said in a post on his verified Facebook page.
Addressing the nation, he wrote, “Dear countrymen, a strong earthquake occurred just a while ago. We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the earthquake. We pray for the departed souls and wish a quick recovery for the injured. May Allah keep us safe. Please remain alert and cautious. During any tremor, try to move to a safe place with care.”
He also shared a set of precautionary measures to raise public awareness.
If indoors, he advised people to drop, cover, and hold on under a sturdy table or desk and to stay away from windows, glass, doors, heavy cupboards, and gas or fire sources. He emphasized that elevators should not be used during an earthquake.
For those outdoors, he urged maintaining distance from buildings, trees, electric wires, and signboards, and standing in an open area while keeping the head low.
If inside a vehicle, he suggested stopping in a safe location away from bridges, overpasses, buildings, or trees, and remaining inside until the shaking stops.
After the tremor, he advised checking gas, electric, and water lines, avoiding elevators, inspecting buildings for possible damage before exiting, and ensuring all family members are safe. He also reminded the public to stay prepared for potential aftershocks.
