Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday warned engineers and public officials against corruption, saying people are now more aware and will no longer tolerate misuse of power or public money.

He made the remarks while speaking at the closing ceremony of the 78th founding anniversary programme of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The minister said a new public awareness has grown in the country following the July mass uprising, adding that people now want a corruption-free and accountable Bangladesh.

Referring to development projects during the previous government’s tenure, he alleged that huge amounts of public money were spent without proper work being carried out.

He urged engineers to act responsibly while preparing and implementing projects, saying their work must directly benefit the people.

Fakhrul also said the country’s engineers belong to one of the most educated sections of society and therefore carry greater responsibility toward the nation.

During his speech, he paid tribute to those who protested against repression and enforced disappearances, as well as the young people who lost their lives during the movement.

Mohammad Riazul Islam presided over the programme held at the IEB auditorium in Dhaka.
