The government of Bangladesh has officially announced February 25 as ‘National Martyred Army Day,’ a day to honor and remember the sacrifices of army officers who lost their lives in the 2009 Pilkhana tragedy.
The Cabinet Division issued a formal circular today, making the declaration known to all concerned authorities.
The decision has gained attention after legal advisor Asif Nazrul shared the government’s circular on his verified Facebook page.
This act has sparked a conversation, reflecting on the tragic event that took place over a decade ago.
According to the circular, signed by Deputy Secretary Tania Afroz, February 25 will now be observed every year as ‘National Martyred Army Day,’ though it will not be marked by a public holiday.
The day has been added as a ‘Category G’ event in the Cabinet Division’s guidelines for observing national and international days.
All relevant ministries, government divisions, and associated organizations have been asked to make proper arrangements for observing the day, ensuring that the memory of the fallen soldiers is honored appropriately.
The tragic incident, which occurred on February 25, 2009, claimed the lives of 74 individuals, including 57 army officers, during the infamous Pilkhana massacre in Dhaka.
This day, marked by grief and sorrow, is now being officially recognized at a national level to acknowledge the supreme sacrifices made by the brave army personnel.
This state recognition not only serves as a solemn reminder of the massacre but also brings the nation together to reflect on the importance of security forces and their role in safeguarding the country.
